Angels.
I saw an angel the other day. Seriously. It was lying down in the back of a
car, looking very grey. "Dead angel" I thought. But it turned out to be
concrete or somesuch. Whether it was for a grave or someone's back garden I
don't know, but it made me think about people who see or hear something they
take as divine, and what it might mean to them.
Personally I suspect many of these visions or signs are people interpreting what
they see or hear in a way that suits or helps them, and don't look for another
explanation, perhaps because they "know" they don't need to, or because they
don't want to. I know from personal experience that perception is fallible,
I'll tell a customer "hopefully it should be ready early next week" but what
many of them seem to hear is "it'll definitely be ready Monday morning". Maybe
that's just me.... But the point there is that even with something as trivial
as a computer repair people's perceptions of reality are sadly failing them.
How much more will they fail someone who REALLY wants something to believe in,
something that will, if not guarantee eternal life, at least give them the hope
and faith that it exists?
Steve Irwin seemed a nice bloke, very committed and dedicated to his cause. But
he was always going to meet a sudden end, didn't you think? I suppose that was
part of the fascination, the fact he always seemed to be in imminent danger,
while you know that he at least was going to live through the episode you were
watching. But while something fatal did seem inevitable (well obviously) it's
still a sudden loss and our sympathies go to his wife and children in
particular.
Nothing lasts, you may have noticed that's kind of the theme round here...
Airfix has gone and with it part of the childhood of many people.
Certainly part of mine.... (Still, I have enough of them in the loft to
last me out :-)
